An accident with a boom crane on a Midtown construction project has left one man dead, according to recent reports. Fire officials said that the accident occurred at 44th Street and Second Avenue when the crane, which was attached to a truck, pinned the man down, causing life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the accident was not immediately clear. An investigation will be launched to determine what led up to the incident.
Construction Accidents Common Cause of Injury
Of all work-related accidents, construction site accidents are some of the most common. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, construction accidents account for at least one out of every five fatalities on job sites.
Construction accidents occur under all conditions, but there are some types of accidents that are more common than others. These are known as the “Fatal Four” and include falls, being struck by an object, electrocution and being caught in or between machinery or objects. Together, the Fatal Four account for nearly 58 percent of all construction-related deaths.
Clearly, construction sites have a duty to protect workers. However, a worker who is hurt on the job site may have trouble collecting compensation. In many cases, there are several layers of liability which can be confusing to the average person. The property owner, the equipment owner and the construction worker’s employer may all be different people, while other parties may also have liability for the accident. In most cases, it is best to allow a personal injury attorney who is familiar with construction accidents to handle the investigation of a case.
