Discussing Conclusion of Recent Autism Study

Autism is a condition that has seemingly exploded in prevalence in recent years, and researchers have been spending countless hours trying to understand why this has happened along with finding a cause and a cure for the disease.  Unfortunately, at this point there is no tangible progress to report on any of these fronts.  However, the results of a study have recently been released that tie at least one potential problem with the mother that exists while she is pregnant to the risk of having a child with autism.

Researchers at the MIND Institute at the University of California at Davis have recently completed a statistical study that took a close look at the medical records of approximately 1,000 children who were between the ages of 2 and 5.  The reason was to attempt to identify some connections between the conditions of the mothers of children who had autism and to differentiate those possible factors from others.  The results were extremely surprising.

According to the conclusion offered by this study, women who were obese while they were pregnant were nearly 67 percent more likely to have a child who would ultimately be diagnosed with some form of autism than the women who were not obese during pregnancy.  Women who were obese during pregnancy were also twice as likely as the non-obese women to have children who experienced at least one form of a developmental delay.

While this study was limited to a statistical analysis, its results will certainly prompt more study with regards to this potential connection.  One theory that’s been making the rounds already indicates that some feel that because a woman is obese – defined as at least 35 pounds overweight – that her blood sugar can be elevated.  The presence of high amounts of blood sugar and other harmful substances could ultimately reach the brain of the fetus and damage its development.
