“When a physician makes a mistake, it usually results in a horrific injury.” That’s what an attorney representing a woman who experienced a devastating aneurysm said during her medical malpractice trial that eventually netted the her an $8 million judgement.
We’ll talk about it in this issue.
The Case at a Glance
Before experiencing “the worst headaches of her life,” the woman enjoyed an extremely active life, including lots of hiking. While standing in the hallway of her home one day, she collapsed from the pain of an excruciating headache.
She was taken to the hospital where the emergency room physician ordered a scan of her head. After the attending radiologist decided that the scan was normal, the woman was diagnosed with a migraine and she left the hospital.
Just 12 days later, she collapsed from the aneurysm. Her brain was severely damaged and she remains paralyzed from the neck down.
How The Jury Ruled
The doctors were adamant that they had followed proper procedure. At the end of the trial, however, the jury placed the blame on the doctors for missing the aneurysm, and awarded the woman $8.2 million.
Severe Headaches Often Tell-Tale Sign of Brain Aneurysm
Unfortunately, identifying an unruptured brain aneurysm early is difficult because there aren’t usually any symptoms.
The woman in the case described above, however, seems to have experienced a brain aneurysm that had ruptured. Among the symptoms that should point doctors into identifying it are:
- Sudden and severe headache that’s much more intense than previous headaches
- Neck pain
- Sensitivity to light
